Sharing the Joy of Playful Learning

During our summer pilot, we fueled playful learning with families to help grow strong readers, starting with a road map drawn directly from the hopes of our communities.

With every post, meet up and poster hung, families added a new chapter to our city's story of love for our children. Add your voice to Right2ReadPhilly...only then will the revolution be literate.

A MEASURE OF SUCCESS

From the ground up, we developed Right2Read Philly in ways that made it possible for us to continually track our reach and impact. Here’s what we found.

IMPACT MAP

Community Outreach

We sent Team Rocky out across the city, spreading the word to families and friends everywhere about Simple Signs and the Freedom Schools Alphabet Song. Together, we reached more than 7,000 individuals at 56 in-person events.

We also helped lead more than 20 virtual briefings and trainings, including to teachers, social workers, nurse practitioners and community advocates.

We’ve been teaching our 6 mo baby signs like “milk” and “more” and “all done” and “read.” He knows the sign for “mama,” but we weren’t sure about the sign for “mommy” — which matters because we’re a 2 mom household. @photonovic what do you suggest — should we finger spell?
Our family has enjoyed teaching our 18 month old the simple signs. She seems so pleased to share her excitement about what she sees and to request what she needs with signs. We've discovered that pairing the signs with music helped her learn them.
We taught baby signs to both our children from the beginning. My mother - who had two deaf sisters - was incredibly against it for all of the reasons you stated, but both children were able to communicate far earlier than the children around them and both had much larger vocabularies than was normal for their age. Our son went on to teach himself ASL when he was about 11. Couldn’t be prouder.

Appreciation & Encouragement

"THANK YOU! KEEP IT UP!"

Amplifies and energizes the campaign with praise, including messages and calls for continued efforts.

This is beautiful. I’m from Philly and reside in S.C. I would love to see more disability awareness and sensitivity in my community. Continue to enrich the lives of the families you serve. You are doing AMAZING work.
Thanks for this! I was just thinking/wondering the other day about ASL users' road to reading!
This is awesome!! Thanks for doing this. It’s the most fun we’ve had saying the Alphabet

Attitudinal Expression

"I FELT SOMETHING."

Reflects an attitude, thought or emotional response, including positive, negative, or neutral emotions, such as excitement, joy, frustration, or even disinterest.

This is awesome! Reminds me of the Phonics Apple my mother made for us growing up. It’s how we learned to sound out words. This is wonderful to see!!! And it DOES look like a Sesame Street episode! 🙌🏾👊🏾
Thank you for including the fun and joy of double dutch alongside this amazing reading campaign! It was a pleasure 😊
❤️ everything she says here! Kass is building her bilingual vocabulary daily and I couldn't be more proud of her

My Grandbabies doing their thing here… spread the news: Reading is Everywhere!! ❤️❤️❤️
My dad would do the same thing for my sister and me: he'd invent stories about the animals he saw on his way to work and he would teach us about the animals' behaviours along the way.

Knowledge Gained

"I LEARNED SOMETHING."

I learned so much and I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such an impactful movement!
Our family has enjoyed teaching our 18 month old the simple signs. She seems so pleased to share her excitement about what she sees and to request what she needs with signs. We've discovered that pairing the signs with music helped her learn them.
I've been looking for someone to do sign language because my son is non-verbal so I wanted to teach him. I think this is a really good thing to teach the parents and definitely for those with children with autism disabilities.

Vital Partnerships

"I LEARNED SOMETHING."

Expresses need/understanding of allies, collaborators, sponsors, funders and more, recognizing support for or by specific individuals or groups, including: friends, neighbors, teachers, service providers and community members.

@leighherenow_ for a two mom household I've seen people use either created sign names or a variant of parents that goes front to back on the cheek instead of vertically. Another friend signs mama and then "mom+sign name" for their mommy
Listen to my brillant friend @photonovic! Rowan is the most confident little beast with his language skills. So many people say to me they want to teach their children sign language, or learn themselves - there is literally not one downside, and so many reasons to do it
Super excited for this launch🚀, We’ll see you in the ropes 🤗

Content Engagement

"I LEARNED SOMETHING."

Presents some kind of action, for instance, by asking a follow-up question, expressing a desire to learn more or sharing the content with others (including tagging).

I learned to read that book in Canada in the 1980s.
My dad would do the same thing for my sister and me: he'd invent stories about the animals he saw on his way to work and he would teach us about the animals' behaviours along the way.
That's so cool! My dad used to make up these stories about how he saved a town and then they made him the mayor, then he'd make a bunch of silly rules that got him fired. Lots of giggles 😊

Advocacy Connection

"I LEARNED SOMETHING."

Shows some type of activism, including the alignment of the campaign with larger movements (e.g., community, social justice, inclusion).

I am waiting for you to be on Seasme Street. On some Black revolutionary stuff❤️🖤💚
See if you all could be featured on Sesame Street. I think this would be a great addition to early literacy and early learning and it's something that will be watched forever. I love watching old episodes of Sesame Street with so many Black famous artists.
Thank you for bringing back Black-teacher tools like this.
